Born in Rustenburg, I grew up on misson stations in the bush. I hated school, started drawing teachers and church elders in my hymnbook and later polititians.
I matriculated at the German School in Pretoria, went to a kibbutz in Israel, then did a diploma in Fine Art at Wits Tech in Johannesburg . I studied Graphic design at the AAA School of Advertising and moved on to be an editorial cartoonist for 10 years at Beeld, Citizen and Daily Dispatch.

I took a 2 year break from cartooning to work for Stephen Klein Design studio as workshop manager, doing 3d off the wall commissions, before joining the Citizen.

I love designing and making things with my hands. My workshop and my powertools are my paradise, but I always need that balance between 2d and 3d, drawing people and especially faces.

I live with my wife and 2 daughters in Cape Town.

I was schooled in Cape Town and studied design and illustration at Stellenbosch University. I’ve been working in Johannesburg in various advertising agencies and design studios for print and TV animation.
Illustration
I like to call myself a character artist, which encompasses all the arts of cartooning, caricature, character design, drawing and children’s illustration. I enjoy climbing behind the easel and drawing caricatures or painting watercolours at events, I finish caricatures in 5 minutes each. I have also become somewhat of a Photoshop wizard from my years of compositing. I work across many mediums in a variety of styles, but humour seems to be my forté.

Animation
I have 10 years of varying experience in the demanding world of TV animation and design. I’ve done ads, promos, show intros, corporate videos, music videos and a movie intro sequence. I can integrate 2D animation into a 3D scene to ensure a high production value. My time in TV also stands me in good stead for creating storyboards and animatics because I know how directors think and what cameras can do.

Riaan

My story will sound like any other artist who is passionate about art. It was something I always wanted to do since I was a child. While the other boys played rugby I would bend over my paper with a pencil in my hand.

I am still bent over my art using my Wacom Intuos 5 tablet instead of pencils. I can not stop myself creating pictures!!! It is my drug...

I do most of my art in the digital format, using Photoshop as my main machine for illustrations. For my 3D art I employ Blender to craft some of my more tangible characters and concepts.

I love creating the unknown and unseen. Creating a creature, object or world from scratch must be one of the most rewarding activities out there.
